Honors Event: Halloween Movie Night

On Thursday, October 19, I attended an Honors Movie Night in the Multicultural Center. The movie that was shown was "The Purge: Election Year." I had never seen this movie and I really enjoyed it. I am a big fan of horror movies so this was right up my alley. We were also served pizza, which is always a good thing.
More than the movie, I enjoyed spending some time with my fellow honors students. I attended the movie with 3 other honors students. It felt really good to be able to hang out with friends and take our minds off of all the school-work we had. It was a very relaxing experience and allowed me to bond with fellow honors students.
I believe that it is events such as these that makes the honors college more like a family just a group of students. While classes and academic events do bring honors students together, it is the honors events such as movie nights that allow us to bond as people, rather than just as students. This is part of the reason that I love being a part of the honors college. It gives me a close-knit community to be a part of and to grow with.

Paper and Ink: Prints/Drawings/Installations Exhibit Reception

Last Thursday, September 14, I attended the Paper and Ink artist reception in the Reece Museum. I'll have to admit, this was the first art exhibit I've ever attended, but I enjoyed it very much. There were two artists, John Hilton and Laken Bridges, whose works were displayed. John's work was primarily black and white, and inlcuded himself incorporated into his work. For example, he had one piece that showed his face on the body of chicken. He explained that this reminded him of his humble beginnings and how far he'd come because he had grown up around cock fighting, but that kind of culture does not represent the person he is now. While I loved John's art, I was truly inspired by Laken's work. Her work portrayed some of the "dirty work" in society that we often don't think about when we think of beautiful art. Volunteering: My Placement at Girls Inc. and Exchange Place Service Project

This semester I was enrolled in SRVL 1020-088, which is Introduction to Service Learning. I took this course as a requirement for the PHCSS program. In this class, everyone was placed at a non-profit agency to volunteer for the whole semester. Everyone was required to complete 30 hours at their agency site, as well as 4 hours at a group service project. There were many agencies that we were allowed to pick from in the tri-cities, and there were 4 or 5 group service projects that we could choose from.  I chose Girls Inc. in Kingsport as my agency placement. Girls Inc. is a non-profit after-school program for girls grades K-12. Girls Inc. has many sites across the nation, and their main goal is to "inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold." Each day at Girls Inc., the girls have a snack and free time to play in the gym or on the playground outside when it is warm. After that, they separate into groups to do different activities. Collo Event: Creative Writing Festival

On April 10, 2018, I attended a presentation at the Creative Writing Festival, which was held in the Reece Museum here at ETSU. The session I attended was the Fiction Writing Workshop with Mark Powell. Powell spoke on fiction writing and how to be a successful fiction writer. One of the points that he made that shocked me was that fiction writers cannot explicitly tell the reader how they should be feeling. The writer can't say "This is very sad." Fiction writers must evoke feelings in the reader by the tone they set in their writing. Writers must allow readers to experience the story as the characters do, so that the readers must figure out their emotions like the characters do. Powell talked about how a writer's real life influences and shows through their fiction works.
